Ahmed Wahdan is a popular Egyptian artist and one of the last representatives of the Mohamed Ali Avenue School in Cairo. This avenue - a prestigious music centre in Egypt for a long time - is now frequented by singers and instrumentalists from the surrounding popular districts. These are non-academic musicians and most of the time non-readers. They work in popular weddings, private parties or muled (saint’s feasts in the ancient urban fabric).

Ahmad is rooted in an urban tradition and is the custodian of an important repertoire of songs from the 1920s (Hatgann, the second piece in the film) to the 1970s, songs he sings while accompanying himself with the ‘ud (Arabic lute) and accordion (acclimatised for decades to Arabic music and its quarter tones). He also writes and composes his songs (’atshan ya nour, the first track of the film).
