Abstract of the current research project:

Urban Sociability and Spaces in the Arab World: Garden Natures and Public Spaces.

This project proposes to study the urban Arab world from the perspective of an urban anthropology that does not deny anthropology of nature. Will be studied, in Egypt, Sudan and Yemen, urban public spaces and their sociability, particularly in recreational places (such as downtown and public gardens), dealing with production and social construction of spaces.

Space is certainly produced and constructed, but the project is to analyse the lived, subjective and daily nature of places in the aim to document the role of social actors in this environment, with the filter of enchantment and control. The recent social upheavals of the territories of Arab cities require the study of multiple relationships of people among themselves and with their living space. To play on words, we say that studying the nature in the city allows us to access to the nature of the city, social space and moral practices, from an “urban ecology” based on the urban garden natures.
