– Abstract:
Living in the desert may seem incongruous: the desert, rather than being an absence of life in a hot, dry place, is precisely an absence of humans. Are they absent from the deserts of the Sahara and Arabia? Not quite: humans inhabit them, intensely, but in discontinuous or scattered ways. Establishing a fixed human community in the desert means inventing an environment where people can live and reproduce, establishing an oasis, inventing rules for doing more than just surviving there and... staying in communication with the world, always.
